Beware Conficker Worm Attack and Secure Your PC

January 17, 2009

150225-wormsI don’t know I am a victim of this big amazing attack or not but I know how warm make your life hell. Anyway recent news is 6.5 million Windows PCs have been infected by the “Downadup” worm in the last four days, and that nearly 9 million have been compromised in just over two weeks according to F-Secure Corp.

Downadup — which also goes by the name “Conficker” — exploits a bug in the Windows Server service used by Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Server 2003 and Server 2008. Although Microsoft fixed the flaw with one of its rare “out of cycle” updates in late October, but most PCs have not yet been patched, according to Qualys Inc., another security company. Those PCs are the ones being hijacked by the worm.

Once executed, Downadup disables a number of system services, including Windows Automatic Update, Windows Security Center, Windows Defender, and Windows Error Reporting. The worm then connects to a malicious server, where it downloads additional malware to install on the infected computer.

So please patch your Windows OS with latest patches to avoid this hijacking.

PC Security Tips: Encrypt Your Data In XP

January 9, 2009

Whether you are a business man or a general people but your securities always have great value to you; in your public life as well as digital life. If always need to secure your data from others. There will be always some private things to you. Encrypting data is a good process to protect your private file.

When you encrypt a file or folder, you are converting it to a format that can’t be read by other people. A file encryption key is added to files or folders that you choose to encrypt. This key is needed to read the file. Windows XP Professional makes the encryption and decryption process easy—simply follow the steps below to encrypt your files or folders. When you are logged on to your computer, you’ll be able to read them. Anyone who tries to use your computer without your logon will not be able to read them.

Note: Make sure you have your computer set up so that you have to log on to use it (when you start up, or when you have been away from the computer for a little while). If the computer is stolen when you’re logged in, your encrypted files will be readable.

To encrypt a file or folder

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
  2. Right–click the file or folder that you want to encrypt, and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab, click Advanced.
  4. Select the Encrypt contents to secure data check box.

encrypt_01

Note: Files or folders that are compressed cannot also be encrypted. If you encrypt a compressed file or folder, that file or folder will be uncompressed.

If you have chosen to encrypt a single file, you can also choose to encrypt the folder that contains it. Select Encrypt the file and the parent folder in the Encryption Warning dialog window. All files created in the encrypted folder will now be automatically encrypted.

encrypt_02

If you encrypt a folder instead of a single file, you can choose to encrypt all the contents of the folder as well.

encrypt_03

To decrypt a file or folder

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
  2. Right–click the file or folder that you want to encrypt, and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab, click Advanced.
  4. Clear the Encrypt contents to secure data check box.

When you decrypt a folder, you must decide whether to decrypt the folder only or to decrypt the folder and all files and subfolders contained in the folder. If you choose to decrypt the folder only, the files and subfolders within the folder remain encrypted. However, when you add new files and subfolders to the folder, they will not be automatically encrypted.

encrypt_04

Remember, anyone who accesses your computer will also be able to access a decrypted file or folder. Windows XP Professional gives you the power to help keep your files and folders safe from unauthorized access. Use Windows XP Professional to encrypt important information on your computer and help keep your data safe.

Software Trick:How to Configure Kaspersky To Allow File and Print Sharing?

December 29, 2008

kaspersky

File and print sharing are a convenient feature in Windows XP but have some security issues. Strong measures such as firewalls are key to the safety of a network. However, if not configured properly, such software can actually block access to file and print sharing. Most vendors provide documentation which explains the correct way to set this.  I just try to explain how you going to configure Kaspersky, that idea will help you to configure other anti-virus software too. Kaspersky Internet Security is a very strong application which can be configured to protect each computer but also allow access to file and print sharing at the same time. It also has built-in anti-virus, pop-up blocker and a large database of virus definitions which it uses to detect threats and other intrusions. It actively protects im such a way that it prevents infections before they can install themselves. It is effective in restricting unauthorized connections to shares from over the Internet without blocking them from legitimate machines inside the LAN. The best part is that Kaspersky comes with a 3-user license allowing it to be installed on up to 3 computers at once, perfect for protecting a small LAN.

Here are the step-by-step instructions to configure Kaspersky to allow file and print sharing:

  1. Open Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0
  2. Click the ‘Settings’ button. This opens the main settings window.
  3. In the menu on the left, click the black box to the left of where it says ‘Protection’ to expand the list of options beneath it (if it is not already expanded).
  4. Click ‘Firewall’. This opens the firewall options.
  5. Under ‘Filtration System’, click the ‘Settings…’ button. This opens another settings window.
Note: Be careful, there are two of these buttons on the same screen under different categories. Make sure to click the one towards the top.
  6. Click the ‘Zones’ tab.
  7. Highlight the zone for your network adapter by clicking it once. You can find the correct zone by scrolling to the right and looking under the ‘Description’ column. If it lists the name of an Ethernet card as the description then that is the one.
Note: If you have two adapters, for instance one wireless and one Ethernet, you will need to do this to whichever one is used for sharing. Both adapters can be set for this as well, if needed.
  8. Under ‘Rule description (click underline parameters to edit):’ find where it says ‘Zone Status: Internet’. The word ‘Internet’ is in blue letters with an underline. Click it twice so it changes to “Local Network”.
Note: Do not use the ‘Trusted’ setting. It is very insecure.
  9. Click ‘OK’.
  10. Click ‘OK’ on the previous Window.
  11. Close Kaspersky. Do not worry, this does not close the entire program. It will still be running and guarding the PC.
  12. Do this to all PCs which will be used to share files and/or printers.
