Indian Police Adopt SMS to Fight Against Terror
January 7, 2009
The recent terrible moment teach us lot, now the Hyderabad police have added the short messaging service to its dial 100 facility to clamp down on terror activities.
To supplement its Dial 100 facility, the Hyderabad police have now added the short messaging service to clamp down on terror activities in the city.
To begin with, the cops, in association with both GSM and CDMA mobile service providers, will soon send out messages to select people asking them to report any suspicious individuals or activities including dangerous objects in their surroundings. The messages will also ask citizens to be alert about abandoned bags and unattended vehicles parked in busy areas for long hours, among others.
The scope of this initiative is also being extended to help people facing immediate danger to life and property, or come across a criminal who is wanted by the police, as also when they are caught in serious traffic jam for a long time.
If a citizen is having a complaint on traffic, he will have to type “t”, followed by a space and the brief complaint. Similarly, for crime related issues one has to type “c”, for harassment of women “w” and for complaints on terror “te”, as per Police Commissioner B. Prasada Rao.
The number to send the SMS message is – 9010100100.
Though this type of experiment already done by Kolkata Police during Puja, hope all metro cities in India adopt this type of service soon to fight against terror.
